Spray foam: questions before choosing a system
Compare the proposed assembly, named product and installation arrangements rather than treating every spray foam quotation as the same service.
Name the product and the purpose
Ask whether the proposed foam is open-cell or closed-cell and why the installer considers it appropriate for the particular location. NRCan lists multiple insulation materials with different characteristics. Request the manufacturer’s current technical information for the exact product. A generic statement about foam is not a specification for your wall, roof or foundation.
Ask about the complete installation
Have the quote identify preparation, areas included, installation target and any required protective finish. Request an explanation of how this work connects with the building’s air and moisture control layers. Confirm who determines applicable project requirements and who coordinates any inspection. Avoid assuming that one material automatically solves every comfort or moisture issue.
Plan occupancy and communication
Ask the installer for the product-specific work area, ventilation and re-entry instructions in writing before booking. Agree how occupants, pets and other trades will be kept informed. Do not use a general website timetable in place of the actual manufacturer and installer instructions for the selected system.
Specify the records you want
Ask for product identification, installer details, agreed inspection records and photographs where appropriate. Have the proposal explain how a concern after installation would be assessed and who you would contact. Compare warranties by their actual issuer, coverage, exclusions and claim procedure rather than by a headline duration.
