Planning insulation below a room over a garage

A cold room above a garage needs an assessment of the whole floor assembly. The project brief should identify comfort symptoms, services, existing finishes and any separation requirements that the work could disturb.

Describe the room and garage

Record where discomfort occurs and whether the room has changed use. Show the garage ceiling, perimeter junctions and penetrations in photographs. Provide renovation drawings and previous work records where available.

Coordinate the assembly

Ask the designer or assessor to explain the intended insulation and air-control approach. Have any required fire separation, service protection and finish reinstatement addressed explicitly by the appropriate professional. Do not assume that exposed insulation can replace the existing ceiling assembly.

Plan disruption and acceptance

Clarify vehicle and storage removal, working access, opening finishes and return visits. Request a scope that includes preparation and reinstatement as well as insulation. Agree on the inspection points before the ceiling is closed and keep photographs of concealed work.
